The Origin of Pomegranate

Pomegranates originated in countries such as Iran and Afghanistan, and were later introduced to China. The "Records of the Grand Historian" records: "Han envoy Zhang Qian went on a mission to the Western Regions and brought back pomegranate seeds from the Anshi Kingdom in Turan." Zhang Qian brought pomegranates, originally from the Anshi Kingdom in the Western Regions, into the Central Plains. Because the fruit's shape resembled a large tumor, it was named "Liu" based on a homophone. During the Tang Dynasty, Empress Wu Zetian especially loved pomegranates, so their cultivation entered a period of prosperity and development, with a time when pomegranate flowers were widespread near the suburbs of Chang'an. When Yang Guifei was at Huaqing Palace, she also particularly liked pomegranate flowers and personally planted many pomegranate trees around the Seven Saints Hall to admire the beautiful appearance of the pomegranate flowers, thus earning the pomegranate the beautiful name "Guifei Flower Pomegranate."
