In today's society, especially among young people, there is an increasing preference for strong-flavored foods, such as deep-fried, pan-fried, stir-fried dishes, and barbecue, preferably spicy and salty. After meals, they often have some dessert or alcohol. Eating like this three times a day puts a lot of pressure on the stomach, and over time, stomach problems gradually develop. Symptoms of damp-heat in the spleen and stomach include bitter mouth, bad breath, nausea, indigestion, vomiting, irritability and thirst, mouth ulcers, sticky and foul-smelling stools, and frequent abdominal pain. To regulate damp-heat in the spleen and stomach, one should start with daily diet and consume foods that clear heat and promote dampness elimination. What are the dietary therapy methods?

1. Five Flower Tea

Five-flower tea is made from kapok flowers, locust flowers, frangipani, honeysuckle, and kudzu root flowers. A small handful of each flower is washed clean and then boiled in a pot with water to make tea. Most of the flowers in this tea have the effect of clearing heat and relieving summer heat, especially honeysuckle, which has a significant effect in clearing heat and detoxifying. It is very effective for people who suffer from headaches or mouth ulcers caused by sunstroke. People with damp-heat in the spleen and stomach can drink it continuously for a week, and their stools will no longer be sticky.

2. Lily and Winter Melon Soup

Take an appropriate amount of dried enoki mushrooms, wash them clean, and cut them into two sections. Soak them in boiling water for about twenty minutes and set aside. Wash the winter melon, peel it, and cut it into thin strips. Put boiling water or broth into a pot, bring it to a boil, then add the soaked enoki mushrooms and winter melon strips to the pot and cook for a short while. Then add some seasonings and it is ready to eat. Winter melon has the effect of clearing heat and removing dampness; people with internal damp-heat can eat more winter melon.

3. Stir-fried bitter melon

Cut fresh bitter melon into thin strips, blanch in boiling water to remove the bitterness, then stir-fry in a pan until 90% cooked before consuming. Most bitter foods are effective in clearing heat and detoxifying, so bitter melon, as a daily ingredient, should be paired with "strong-flavored" dishes in everyday cooking.

4. Barley and red bean water

The most common ingredients for dispelling dampness are coix seeds and red beans. Putting half raw and half cooked coix seeds and red beans together into a pot to stew into a soup to drink can help the body expel internal dampness and also relieve damp-heat conditions in the stomach and intestines. Remember to be careful not to make it too sweet when seasoning.

Of course, these are just dietary suggestions for everyday life; what really matters is changing the habit of eating heavily flavored foods!
