Everyone, in this lifetime, will have a few nights when they just can't sleep, especially as the weather in Malaysia gradually becomes more humid and hot, making it even harder to fall asleep. What can be done about this?
We often say "nurture the liver in spring, nurture the heart in summer." Summer is a good season for nurturing the heart, but insomnia in summer especially "harms the heart." How so?
Traditional Chinese medicine has the saying "sweat and blood share the same origin." The heart governs the blood vessels, and there is also the saying "fluid and blood share the same origin." Body fluids are the material basis for producing sweat. In summer, when sweating is heavy, the heart's burden naturally increases.
Sleep can reduce heart stress and restore heart function. If insomnia persists for a long time, the heart cannot recover, leading to myocardial ischemia and increased blood pressure, naturally causing damage to the heart.
Traditional Chinese medicine summarizes what we commonly call "insomnia" as "bu mei" (inability to sleep), believing it is caused by "yang not entering yin, spirit not guarding the residence." Gua sha can adjust the body's yin-yang balance, relieve fatigue, and improve sleep, making it the most suitable method.
You can choose to scrape from the back of the neck to the midline of the back and both sides, as well as from both sides of the neck to the upper edge of the shoulders. At the same time, press acupoints such as Neiguan, Zusanli, Hegu, Sanyinjiao, and Shenmen, and it is even better to massage the Baihui acupoint. When performing at home, it is sufficient to locate the acupoints approximately.
During the operation, take a natural and comfortable position. The practitioner first evenly applies scraping oil to the skin of the patient's treatment area, then uses the right hand to hold the scraping board to scrape until slight purplish-red or purplish-black petechiae appear under the skin.
Can be performed once daily; if the skin at the treatment site is severely painful, it can be performed once every other day.
In addition to scraping therapy, relieving insomnia can also be addressed through diet, such as eating medicinal foods that nourish the heart, calm the mind, and strengthen the spleen, avoiding greasy, raw, and spicy foods, and refraining from eating before bedtime. Below are two recommended tea therapies:
