Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the fundamental cause of excessive dreaming is due to internal changes in the body. The "Su Wen · Discussion on the Flourishing and Decline of Prescriptions" states: "Therefore, the deficiency of qi causes people to have false dreams, reaching the extreme of confusion." The so-called deficiency of qi means insufficient qi; when qi is insufficient, yang does not guard yin, and the spirit loses its guard, thus causing excessive dreaming. This is one of the causes. Furthermore, emotional injury harms the internal organs, depletes essence and qi, causing unrest of the spirit and resulting in excessive dreaming; deficiency of yin and blood cannot nourish the heart spirit, which subtly involves the liver soul and restrains the minister fire, causing the spirit to wander and leading to excessive dreaming; if caused by phlegm-heat disturbing the liver and gallbladder, the soul cannot be at peace, resulting in excessive dreaming; excessive labor and desire cause imbalance of water and fire, and failure of heart and kidney communication, leading to unrest of the heart spirit and excessive dreaming; irregular diet causes deficiency of earth and stagnation of wood, resulting in unrest of the spirit and excessive dreaming. The occurrence of excessive dreaming leads to restless sleep and a multitude of dreams.
All of the above reasons are actually related to daily routines. Dietary habits, work stress, and physical constitution can all cause excessive dreaming. Some people may also experience symptoms of insomnia and easy awakening. Here, we introduce 3 main symptoms of excessive dreaming and their management methods:
Treatment plan: Regulating the spleen and stomach
If you often dream about things that happen during the day, and the storylines are not strange but quite normal, just those trivial matters, it indicates that you are not in deep sleep and your consciousness is still active. Traditional Chinese medicine says "the spleen governs the mind." People who have such dreams either have poor digestive function or poor absorption function of the spleen. These people belong to the spleen-stomach disharmony type. They have restless sleep at night, and also feel greasy or bland in the mouth, have loss of appetite, and loose stools. Usually, they can often eat millet, lotus seed, and lily porridge or Chinese yam.

Of course, if the condition has persisted for a long time, the above-mentioned syndrome types still need to be diagnosed by a qualified professional Chinese medicine practitioner through pulse diagnosis and inquiry, and prescriptions should be given (Chinese herbal powder does not require decoction, just brew with hot water) to ensure more accurate treatment based on the syndrome.
