In the hustle and bustle of society, many office workers tend to neglect their health, and their stomachs can easily develop problems. Paying attention to daily diet and routine can help us protect our stomachs. So, what should office workers eat to nourish their stomachs? And what are the taboos for stomach care?

- Reasons why office workers have bad stomachs -

Irregular diet

White-collar workers are the main group working overtime. Whether it's weekends or holidays, you can always see them in the office. Sometimes, when rushing to complete tasks, they don't even feel hungry, and only realize it's time to eat the next meal after finishing. Therefore, they inevitably often eat late-night snacks, which increases the burden on the stomach at night and reduces its digestive function.

drink wine

Alcohol is metabolized by the liver, and long-term heavy drinking can increase the burden on the liver and affect its function. Additionally, alcohol directly damages the stomach and esophagus, and patients with gastritis or gastric ulcers are more prone to gastric bleeding. Therefore, those with stomach problems should avoid drinking alcohol, and if they must drink, they should never do so on an empty stomach.

Smoking

Nicotine in cigarettes can act on the vagus nerve, disrupting gastrointestinal activity, relaxing the pyloric sphincter, contracting the gallbladder, making alkaline bile prone to reflux into the stomach, thereby damaging the gastric mucosa. It can also promote increased gastric acid secretion and inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, reducing the secretion of gastric mucosal mucus. All of these can damage the gastric mucosa and lead to gastric diseases.

Yam

Chinese yam has a sweet taste and a neutral nature. It is a mild and nourishing food that has the effect of strengthening the spleen and nourishing the stomach. The unique mucoprotein substance in Chinese yam can moisten the gastric mucosa, protecting the stomach, and it also has a certain effect in treating stomach pain.

spinach

Traditional Chinese medicine points out that spinach has a sweet taste and cool nature, belonging to the liver, stomach, and large intestine meridians. It has the effects of nourishing and promoting blood circulation, moisturizing dryness, calming the liver, and aiding digestion. In daily life, eating an appropriate amount of spinach can promote the secretion of the stomach and pancreas, thereby enhancing digestion. Moreover, spinach contains a very rich amount of cellulose, which helps intestinal peristalsis and thus facilitates bowel movements.

cabbage

Cabbage has the effects of strengthening the spleen and nourishing the stomach, relieving pain and spasms, detoxifying and reducing swelling, and clearing heat and promoting urination. Cabbage stewed with coix seed, dried tangerine peel, and honey can be used to treat epigastric distension and pain, upper abdominal fullness, and gastric and duodenal ulcers. When stewed with adzuki beans, winter melon, and rock sugar, it can reduce swelling and promote urination. However, it is not suitable for those with loose stools or weak spleen and stomach to eat in large amounts.

sweet potato

Sweet potatoes are neutral in nature and sweet in taste, nourishing the spleen and benefiting qi. Consuming them in cold weather helps strengthen the stomach's vital energy, aids digestion and removes accumulation, and can also cleanse the intestines and aid weight loss.

- Taboos for white-collar workers to maintain their stomachs -

Avoid excessive drinking

Alcohol itself can directly harm the gastric mucosa, and alcohol can also cause cirrhosis and chronic pancreatitis, which in turn exacerbate gastric damage. So do not drink excessively. Additionally, smoking must be quit. The harm of smoking cannot be ignored. Quitting smoking not only protects your own health but also protects the health of others.

Avoid coffee and strong tea

Coffee and strong tea are central nervous system stimulants; excessive consumption may cause reflex-induced gastric mucosal ischemia, damaging the protective function of the gastric mucosa and promoting ulcer development. Therefore, white-collar workers who excessively indulge in coffee and strong tea should control their intake to prevent excessive consumption and stomach damage.

Avoid eating anything when you are hungry

Food enters the stomach, where it is stored, ground, and digested, turning into a chyme-like substance before being discharged into the intestines. If chewing is not thorough and one is indiscriminate when hungry, the food will be coarse, which increases the stomach's burden, prolongs retention time, and can cause damage to the gastric mucosa; whereas chewing slowly and thoroughly increases saliva secretion, which reduces the secretion of gastric acid and bile, helping to protect the stomach.

Avoid being nervous and anxious

When a person is troubled or resentful, their negative emotions can be dispersed from the cerebral cortex to the limbic system, affecting the autonomic nervous system, directly causing gastrointestinal dysfunction, secreting excessive gastric acid and pepsin, leading to shortened gastric blood vessels, pyloric spasms, impaired emptying, damage to the protective layer of the gastric mucosa, resulting in self-digestion and the formation of ulcers. Therefore, white-collar workers need to learn to adjust their mindset, trying to remain calm and steady, without anxiety or impatience.

Avoid excessive fatigue

Whether it is physical labor or mental work, excessive fatigue can lead to insufficient blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract, dysfunction of excretory functions, excessive gastric acid, and reduced mucus, causing damage to the mucous membrane.

In addition, white-collar workers should avoid sitting for long periods. Prolonged sitting harms the liver and bones and may cause lower limb edema, leading to lower body obesity. Therefore, when white-collar workers feel fatigued, they must take ample rest.

Avoid uneven hunger and fullness

When hungry, the stomach acid and protease in the stomach are not neutralized by food, resulting in a higher concentration that can easily cause self-digestion of the mucosa. Overeating can also harm the stomach's self-maintenance mechanism; excessive expansion of the stomach wall and prolonged food retention can promote stomach damage.
